Scarecrow Making Instructions

These are basic instructions for a traditional scarecrow.

You will need two sticks.  One will need to be 6 feet long; the second stick should be 3-4 feet.

Slide the shorter stick through the arms of a long sleeve, button up shirt.

Make a cross with the two sticks by placing the shorter stick across the longer one, approximately 5 inches from the top of the longer stick.  Secure them with a couple of nails or screws.

Use string or a rubber band around the cuffs of the sleeves and the neck.

Stuff the arms first, then the rest of the shirt.

Place gloves at the end of the sleeves.

Use rubber bands to cinch the legs of an old pair of pants.  Stuff the pants.  Slide the pants onto the longer stick so that the stick comes out of one of the pant legs.

Tuck the shirt into the pants and secure with safety pins, if necessary.

Stake the scarecrow in the ground before placing the head on top.

Several things can be used for the head: a small pillowcase, burlap sack, pantyhose, fabric cut into a circle and gathered around the edges.  Stuff the head and decorate the face with marker or glued felt.  Place the head on the top of the scarerow and secure to the sticks and shirt.  Use yarn, an old mop, or a wig for hair, and place a hat on top.
